What markers actually reward
The performance standard
Scholarship is not marked Achieved / Merit / Excellence. Each part is scored on a 0–8 scale, and the marks are for the quality of thinking, not for the number of correct lines.
To be awarded Scholarship, you must show:
- High-level analysis and critical thinking — choosing an approach and knowing why it fits.
- Integration and synthesis — joining ideas from different parts of the course into one argument.
- Application of highly developed knowledge and skills to complex situations.
- Logical development, precision and clarity of ideas — the argument reads in order and is unambiguous.
For Outstanding Scholarship, you must also show, sustained across the paper:
- Perception and insight — noticing the structure of the problem, not just grinding it.
- Sophisticated integration and abstraction — generalising, working with parameters rather than numbers.
- Independent reflection and extrapolation — commenting on what the result means, its limits, what happens next.
- Convincing communication.
What this means line by line
- A correct answer with no justification scores poorly. The working is the answer.
- State the tool you are using and why — "the function is continuous on the interval, so..." earns credit that a bare computation does not.
- Define your variables and keep notation consistent. Precision is explicitly assessed.
- Interpret the result in context at the end — a number with no sentence is an unfinished answer.
- If you are stuck, write down the relationship you can see. Partial, well-reasoned progress scores; a blank scores nothing.
