How to use these
- These are written in the shape the AS91439 paper uses — one general question, on a trend you supply, with a comparison built in.
- NZQA's own questions are not reproduced here. These are ours, matched to the format, phrasing and difficulty of the real ones.
- The paper alternates between two kinds of question. Practise both, in roughly equal measure.
- Time yourself at about 60 minutes for a full essay.
Forces questions
- 1. Evaluate TWO forces that influenced a significant historical trend you have studied. Which was the more important force, and why?
- 2. To what extent was a significant historical trend shaped by conditions rather than by ideas?
- 3. Evaluate ONE force that promoted a significant historical trend and ONE force that limited it. Which had the greater influence on the trend's outcome, and why?
- 4. To what extent did the forces influencing a significant historical trend change over the period of the trend?
Effects questions
- 5. Evaluate the changes and continuities produced by a significant historical trend. Which was more characteristic of the trend, and why?
- 6. To what extent did a significant historical trend affect all groups in society equally?

What every one of these has in common
- A trend you supply, not an event and not a person.
- A comparison or a judgement built into the question — which, or to what extent — because that is the Merit criterion.
- No named content.
- Room for continuities, whichever half is asked. Question 4 in particular is a forces question that can only be answered with phases.

Question 4: To what extent did the forces influencing a significant historical trend change over the period of the trend?
This question looks unusual and is worth planning carefully, because it can only be answered with a phased structure — and planning it teaches the structure.
Answer:
Step 1 — notice what the question has done.
It is a forces question, but it does not ask which force mattered more. It asks whether the forces were the same throughout. So the comparison axis is time, not importance.
This means a force-by-force structure cannot answer it. Two self-contained paragraphs, one per force, say nothing about when each operated.
Step 2 — set out the trend with its span, because the span is now doing analytical work.
[Trend], [start date] to [end date]. Every phase boundary will be located inside that span, so the span must be stated precisely.
Step 3 — divide the trend by force, not by date.
- Where did the trend begin to move, and what was operating then? Usually a single condition, with the ideas not yet widespread.
- Where did it move fastest, and what was operating then? Usually more than one force, and often a new one that was absent at the start.
- Where did it stall, and what was holding it? The continuity, and the resisting force it identifies.
- The boundaries between these phases are your claims, and each needs evidence — a date at which the new force becomes visible in the record.
Step 4 — answer the "to what extent" directly, which requires a position on a spectrum.
Three positions are available, and you must pick one:
- The forces were substantially constant, and the trend's changing pace reflects changing conditions rather than changing forces.
- The forces changed substantially, and the trend's later phase was driven by something absent at its start.
- One force was constant and another was not — usually the truest, and the most defensible.
Step 5 — write the position sentence.
Step 6 — check what that delivers.
- Forces explained, and located in time — Achieved.
- Their relative weight assessed across phases, with a stated position — Merit.
- A distinction drawn between change in composition and change in direction, and the trend's behaviour used as the evidence for it — the complexity of the relationship between the trend and the forces, which is the Excellence descriptor.
