Socio-Scientific Issue

Socio-Scientific Issue (AS91527) is a 3-credit internal, and it works differently from the other Physics standards. Your teacher assigns (or you choose, with approval) a real, often debated issue with a physics dimension — nuclear power, cellphone/5G radiation, wind farms, nuclear weapons testing, fracking, or similar — and you must use physics knowledge to develop an informed, justified response, weighing it against social, ethical, economic or environmental factors that aren't physics themselves.

Because the issue is set by your school, this page can't hand you the physics content specific to it — instead it teaches the structure of a well-reasoned response:

• Explain the physics underlying the issue accurately — the science must be correct before any opinion built on it means anything.
• Identify the non-physics factors at play — social (public perception, health), ethical (fairness, consent, risk to others), economic (cost, jobs), environmental (beyond the physics itself).
• Weigh them against each other explicitly — a good response doesn't just list factors, it discusses how they trade off or reinforce each other.
• Reach and justify a position — state a considered stance and explain why it follows from weighing the physics and the other factors together, while acknowledging the strongest point on the other side.
