Internal vs external assessment: what actually counts, and when

Two ways to earn credits

NCEA achievement standards are assessed in one of two ways:

• Internal assessment — completed and marked by your school across the year, on a timeline your teacher sets.
• External assessment — a formal exam (or in some subjects, a portfolio) run and marked by NZQA, usually at the end of the year.

Why this matters for how you revise

Internal assessments are typically "done and dusted" once submitted — your energy for that standard shifts to make sure you've met the requirements before the deadline, not after. External assessments are the ones this site focuses on: the exam is fixed, the content is fixed in advance, and practice under exam-like conditions pays off directly.
